A Lady Named Lottie

Dear Jesse,

When I was a little girl traveling in the car with my family, every time we would hit a pothole, my Mom would say, “Oops, we almost hit China.” How we all laughed as we thought of China all the way on the other side of the world. Now when I am traveling in China and the bus or taxi hits a hole in the road, it is quite natural to think, “Oops, we almost hit America.” That makes me laugh all over again!

Even though America and China are a half a world apart, God’s love extends to the people of both countries and to everyone in between. One of the very reasons that I grew to love China and her people was hearing the stories of Lottie Moon, an American lady who spent most of her life in China telling people about God’s love.

We hear Lottie’s name every year around Christmas time when we give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for World Missions. The offering was named in her honor because she loved the Chinese people so much that she gave her life for them. Lottie Moon once said that if she had 1000 lives, she would give them all to China. Well, she has inspired at least that many people in giving their lives to make sure that Chinese men and women and children hear about the love of Jesus. Many million others give to China through their prayers and offerings.

Even boys and girls give pennies and nickels and dimes and quarters that can be used to purchase Bibles and tracts and other materials that will help Chinese people to hear about Jesus. Isn’t it exciting that through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, we can touch the Chinese people all the way on the other side of the world!

Love from China,
