Double-Decker Busses

Dear Jesse,

I know that you have seen houses with an upstairs and a downstairs, but have you ever seen a two-story bus? There are lots of them in Hong Kong, and we call them double-decker busses.

When children ride the bus, it seems that they always want to sit on the upper deck. The very best seat of all is right at the front where you have an amazing view of everything that is going on in front of you and down below you. Because you are sitting one story higher than ground level, you can see more things than usual. Looking down on people’s heads makes me think of what God must see when He looks down at us! I hope He is happy with the things that He sees us doing.

Busses in China are usually very crowded. Sometimes there are more people standing than there are seated. But on the upper deck, there is hardly ever anyone standing because it is too dangerous. Whenever the bus turns a corner or stops suddenly, it is hard to keep your balance. To get to the upper deck, you must climb up a spiral staircase. Everyone holds onto the handrail because the steps are steep.

The best time to ride a double-decker is at night when all of the city lights are turned on. Hong Kong has been called the “Pearl of the Orient” and when you see the city lights sparkle like jewels, you will understand why. There is also another type of double-decker bus in Hong Kong. This one is called open-air because it has no roof! If you ride an open-air tourist bus, you might get sunburned while you ride around and see the sights. Or if it is raining, you will get soaked for sure.

Either way, a double-decker bus ride is something that you will want to experience when you visit Hong Kong .

Love from China,

Auntie Dee
